Selection Criteria Appeal to Readers Might the book be meaningful and compelling to first-year students? How might it matter to them? Might the book be meaningful and compelling to faculty readers? Will it appeal both to avid and reluctant readers? Does the reading experience make a strong argument on behalf of reading? Avenues for Inquiry Does it open opportunities for discussion ... among students? in classes across disciplines? across the university? Can the book be used as excerpts as well as a whole? Does it suggest a theme or question for year-long investigation? Does it raise significant issues? Might it lead to further reading and discussion about meaningful issues? Might the author be willing to visit campus at least once? Might it lead to programming and events that will sustain dialogue throughout the year? Does it inspire ... wonder? questions? dialogue? creativity? writing? other forms of expression?
